Alaska Reality TV Shows We Want to Be In

Dozens of shows over the past 10 years testify to how much reality TV loves Alaska (34 current shows at last count). If you’ve ever dreamed of mining for gold, becoming a sea captain, or exploring a remote wilderness, Alaska television appeals to everyone who possesses a spirit of adventure. Here’s our list of favorite Alaska reality TV shows, past and present, that we’d love to star in.

Deadliest Catch

Of course we have to start with the most popular, longest running of the Alaska shows. The Deadliest Catch has won 10 Emmys over 10 seasons and is still going strong. We’ll have the chance to breathe the ocean air, enjoy the camaraderie, work hard, and earn some serious bucks. So the obvious question is do we crew the Northwestern, the Time Bandit, the Wizard or the Cornelia Marie?

Bering Sea Gold

Admit it, experiencing the rush of gold fever would be fun. We’d love to join Emily Riedel’s crew aboard her dredge, the Eroica. As Emily says, “Typically gold miners aren’t in it just for fortune; they’re in it for the glorious game.” Stakes are high so if you’ve got a bit of the gambler in you, this is your show.

Mounted in Alaska

Let’s get weird and take a short trip into the world of stuffed dead things. Taxidermy isn’t a skill most people have on their resume, so here’s our chance to learn something new. The weirdest commission for the Knight’s Taxidermy crew? Probably a warthog designed to look like it was bursting though a living room wall – definitely a unique home décor piece.

Life Below Zero

We can’t talk about Alaska reality TV without choosing our favorite survivalist show. Life Below Zero captures what it’s like to deal with the extreme conditions of the remote Alaska wilderness, but Sue Aiken handles every situation with self-reliance, intelligence, and curiosity. We could learn a lot from a woman who’s not afraid to be alone for months at a time. And haven’t you ever wanted to completely escape from civilization, even if for only a little while?

Railroad Alaska

This show is great fun for anyone who was fascinated by trains as a kid (or as a grownup). The trains are a vital lifeline to people living off the grid in rural Alaska by providing supplies, fuel, and medicine. The show may emphasize harsh terrain and extreme weather, but you know the engineers sometimes kick back and enjoy cruising through the gorgeous scenery.

If watching all these great reality shows makes you want to taste life in Alaska, you can try to become a competitor on Ultimate Survival Alaska or purchase your dream home through Living Alaska. Or even better, choose one of the many Gray Line Alaska tour packages and create your own adventure.
